#01 – You Just Did What?

Inspiration can come from the darkest of places…

Everyone knows the Nike trademarked slogan, JUST DO IT. Created by Weiden+Kennedy founder Dan Weiden in the 1980’s, these three simple words helped increase Nike’s share of the sports shoe industry from 18% to 43%.

But have you ever considered where that came from? A brainstorming session amongst marketing professionals on a Thursday afternoon at the office? PLOT TWIST, no. The inspiration came from a murderer on death row: Gary Gilmore.

Bad on multiple fronts, Gary Gilmore was committing crimes by the age of ten, clearly morally corrupt, and as fate would have it, not very good at being murderer.

“The thought of going to live with someone named Brenda in Provo, Utah just sounds like you’re going to live in a bag of Wonder Bread.”

Brandy Old Fashioned Sweet

This is the classic Wisconsin take on this cocktail. Feel those supper club vibes! Others might tell you sour is where it’s at, but we disagree. Pair this cocktail with a great podcast or your local Friday night Fish Fry.

P.S. based on experience, you’ll get attitude from even a Wisconsin bartender if you order this at a busy bar on a Saturday night. So maybe don’t.

Ingredients
  • 1/2 tsp sugar
  • 3 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 2 orange slices (1 to muddle, 1 to garnish)
  • 2 Maraschino cherries (plus as many as you want for garnish)
  • 2 oz Brandy (Korbel if you’re legit, but we won’t judge)
  • 2-3 ice cubes
  • Sprite or 7-Up
Make It At Home
  1. Take your fancy glass and throw in the sugar, bitters, 1 orange slice and 2 cherries. Splash that sweet goodness with some water. Muddle (with a muddler or whatever you’ve got) until the sugar has dissolved.
  2. Add the Brandy and your ice cubes and stir.
  3. Top off with your sweet soda of choice.
  4. Garnish with your extra fruit. (The more cherries, the better. But that’s just us.)
  5. ENJOY
