In her professional career, she’s worked as a marketer and journalist. From non-profits and family-owned businesses to large corporations, she’s used her talent and expertise to weave together an integrated and holistic approach to marketing and storytelling.
Now she’s a full-time solopreneur! Melissa chats with us about what it’s like to run a successful communications business with anxiety. She gives us the glitz and (sometimes not-so-) glamorous take on how to manage client relationships and set healthy boundaries, and she provides advice for business AND solopreneurs on how to manage healthy working relationships with freelancers.

Mel’s love of impactful communication and storytelling can be traced back to the third grade, when she captivated her classmates with the dramatic reading of an original story about a laughing hyena that had lost its laugh – and its quest to get it back. She got an early taste of the magic that happens when a compelling story meets an eager audience – and she was hooked.
After a 15-year career as a communications strategist and director for a wide range of companies – small nonprofits and family businesses to large B2B tech, manufacturing, and financial services organizations, she struck out on her own, and will be celebrating three years of full-time self-employment this fall. Her company, Peapod Marketing & PR Consulting, specializes in all things marketing communications – brand messaging, corporate storytelling, PR and media relations, social media, and content marketing for businesses of all sizes who believe they have a story worth sharing and need help getting it out into the world.
Mel is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a BA in English (Creative Writing emphasis) and Communication Arts (Radio, Television, and Film Production emphasis).

Mel’s Pick: Daquiris (not frozen – shaken and served up)
Similar to our own favorite margarita recipe is the Classic Daquiri. We found this delicious recipe from Garnish with Lemon:
- 2 ounces rum
- 1 ounce lime juice
- ¾ ounce rich simple syrup
SHAKE with ice and strain into an ice-filled glass. Enjoy.
