Unless you – quite literally – have been living under a rock, your social (and news) feeds have been filled with this…

Why? Honestly, we have yet to find a real answer. But from what we do know, this is Kim Kardashian’s homage to the lexicon of American fashion at the 2021 Met Gala on September 13. Kardashian(-West; but let’s be real that’s going real south, real fast), told US Magazine that her outfit “embodied American Independence.”
We don’t see it, but what do we know about fashion. I still have tank tops from Maurice’s.
Why does this matter?

The Met Gala – founded in 1948 – is a fundraiser for the Costume Institute and is one of the most – if not THE most – exclusive event in the WORLD. To be invited is a badge of honor for socialites, celebrities of all grades and types and politicians alike. This $35K per plate fundraiser thrives on it’s social media virality as a way to gain awareness to increase its clout. It’s not a televised event, and photography is banned within the venue – aside from what Wintour let’s slide with Kylie Jenner’s bathroom selfies.

How are you going to get people to care if you can’t make it seem like they’re really missing out?! You bring on a group of the hottest Gen Z’s out there – Timothée Chalamet, Billie Eilish, Amanda Gorman, Naomi Osaka – you get a major social media platform to sponsor (what up, Instagram) and you hire Saint Hoax as your official Meme Correspondent for the event. (That is real).
However, the only thing we – us plebeians – care about is loving to hate this event. And we celebrate that love/hate by going against our own interest and sharing and creating MEMES.
SO MANY MEMES.
Memes for your favorite childhood movies.
Memes for your professional day-to-day.
Memes for when you run in to people you know in Target while you’re in your pj’s and wearing your facemask.
This sh*t has derailed us for two weeks and we’re just no recovering. (If you’re in social media, we can hear you snapping your fingers).
This event is a HUGE opportunity for designers and celebrities. And always a huge win for the Costume Institute. We should probably question whether this parade of disgusting wealth is really all that necessary. But, the more people in on it, the more visibility and engagement one gets, which tends to equal $$$ for some. So much so that even brands are apt to “miss out” by not joining in on the fun.
Memes aren’t new to the Met Gala. You can thank Solange for that after she decked Jay-Z in the face at the 2014 event. Ever since then a social viral miracle was born producing gems like
Rihanna (2015)
Rihanna (2018)
Rita Ora (2016)
Kendall & Kylie (2019)

Memes aside, here are fome of the fan favorites – and ours too – of 2021.
If you need a really quick synopsis of the 2021 looks, this about sums it up…
