For our third installment of the Loosely Professional Fall Book Club, we chat some seriously relatable topics with Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle by Emily Nagoski & Amelia Nagoski.

If you’ve ever felt like you were doing SO many things, feeling overwhelmed and exhausted because of that, but then also wondered if it was enough, welcome to the club. The goal of this book is to shed light on the myths of “wellness” – especially through the lens of womanhood – what it is, what it’s not, and how to realistically strive towards it.

What is burnout? Basically, being 50 shades of DONE. First technically defined in 1975 by Herbert Freudenberger, it was defined by 3 components:

  • Emotional exhaustion – fatigue that comes from caring too much and for too long
  • Depersonalization – depletion of empathy, caring and compassion
  • Decreased sense of accomplishment – feeling that nothing you do makes a difference
